EDIBLE SALT INDUSTRIAL SALT
Many of salt’s 14000uses are found where you’d expect. Salt sets the dye in fabric and is used to produce glass polyester and plastics. Salt assists in cleaning gas and oil wells and is an essential component in the manufacturing of paper, tires, brass, bleach and case-hardened steel, etc.

COMMON SALT FOR CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES UNDER IS: 797-1982
In the considering of the requirements of quality of salt for use in chemical in industries, two grades have been fixed. While the salt industry easily achieve the quality of salt grade II. It is rather difficult to attain the grade I quality unless the salt manufactured is purified by mechanical washery with the use of wet grinding mill and centrifuge In particular, it may mentioned that even the salt manufactured in the salt works under ideal conditions requires rain wash or artificial wash with weak brine or fresh water to bring down the magnesium content to the requirement of chlor-alkali industries.

Characteristics of Grade I, Grade II and Refined in Chlor-alkali Industries
S.No. Characteristics Grade I Grade II Refined
1 Chloride content (as NaCl) percent by mass, min 99.5 98.5 98.5
2 Water insoluble matter percent by mass, max 0.05 0.2 .10
3 Calcium salt (as Ca) percent by mass max 0.03 0.2 0.15
4 Magnisium salt (as Mg) Percent by mass 0.01 0.10 .010
5 Sulphate (as SO4) percent by mass , max 0.2 0.6 0.6
6 Iron Compound ppm max 10 20 -
7 Iron Compound ppm max 1 4 0.5

Additional requirement for Grade II salt in explosive and pyrotechnic industry
S.No. Characteristics Requirements
1 Sulphate 0.5% Max
2 Iron 10 ppm max
3 Akalinity 0.5 max

Additional requirement for Grade II salt in Caustic Soda by electronic process
S.No. Characteristics Requirements
a Vanadium + Chromium + Molybdenum max. 0.01 ppm
b Aluminium max 0.10 ppm
c Other trace metal ( titanium, copper and nickel ) max 0.01 ppm

SALT FOR HPDE CURING UNDER IS: 593-1978
Considerable quality of salt is being used in leather industry for hide- curing. The main function of salt in this operation is dehydration.

Characteristics of salt in Hide Curing
S.No. Characteristics Grade I
1 Chloride content (as NaCl) percent by mass, min 97.0
2 Water insoluble matter percent by mass, max 1.0
3 Metter soluble in water other than sodium chloride, percent by mass max 2.0
4 Alkalinity Percent by mass 0.5
5 Iron Compound ppm max 100

The moisture content shall not be more than 6 % by mass. Any one of the following three preservatives to an extant of not less than 0.5% by mass shall be found in the material
a. Sodium Pentachlorphenate
b. Sodium Orthophenylphenate
c. Zink Chloride
The Material shall also contain not less than 0.2 % by mass of Kerosene oil as denaturant The packages shall be closed and marked with name and mass of the material, name of the manufacturer, batch number and date of packing. The packages shall be marked with the world “Poisonous, Handle with care”

SALT FOR DETERGENTS
Salt finds widespread use in detergents where it fulfils the role of cost effective filler. Salt used in detergents needs to comply with stringent specifications with respect to purity, insoluble, Particle size distribution, Calcium content, and appearance (whiteness). Besides fulfilling its primary role as cost effective filler.

SALT FOR DETERGENTS
  • Powder flow properties
  • Resistance to caking
  • Particle size distribution
  • Bulk density of powder
  • Powder compressibility

Salt Quality for use in detergents
  • Salt should be white in colour as off-colour salt will have a negative impact on colour of final detergent colour.
  • Narrow Particle size distribution is preferred as this gives dry-mix detergent powders go good powder flow properties.
  • High assay salt is desirable as this results in salt of consistent quality due to absence of impurities/ unknowns.
  • The Hygroscopic nature of salt arises out of its calcium and magnesium content
  • Presence of insoluble in salt is undesirable as these impurities could adversely effect stability of sensitive ingredients in detergents.
